Generous deed does a world of good for young and vulnerable

Vulnerable young residents in the City of Swan will receive much needed grocery supplies thanks to the generous good deed of a City employee.

City of Swan employee Corrie Oliver has personally donated $1000 worth of grocery vouchers to the Swan City Youth Service to help alleviate pressure on those affected by COVID-19.

The Midland-based community service helps at risk young people through drug and alcohol counselling, mental health support, medical clinics, accommodation assistance and more.

Ms Oliver won the grocery store vouchers at random after using the Trolley Tracker app, a local initiative that encourages residents to report abandoned shopping trolleys in the community.

The City of Swan encourages residents to report abandoned shopping trolleys when spotted on the streets through the Trolley Tracker app, online through the City’s website or by phoning the City direct.

Since February this year, the City has collected and reported more than 900 abandoned shopping trolleys to local retailers from the Midland area as a part of the shopping trolley collection trial.

At Swan City Youth Service, the vouchers will be used to provide emergency relief to young people through care and welfare packages for those sleeping rough.

Ms Oliver delivered the vouchers to Swan City Youth Service last week and said she was happy the money was put to good use to help people who truly needed it.

“As a resident of Swan, I often report trolleys that I spot in the streets in my personal time and I was very lucky to be randomly selected as a winner,” Ms Oliver said.

“But after I won, my family and I realised there are many people who need these vouchers more than we do, especially in these tough times.

“The Swan City Youth Service do such wonderful work and I’m proud to be able to donate something that can help them continue to support our community.”

City of Swan Chief Executive Officer Mike Foley said Ms Oliver had demonstrated wonderful Swan community spirit.

“In these unprecedented times, kindness certainly goes a long way and it is very heartwarming to see members of our community doing whatever they can to support each other,” Mr Foley said.

“It takes a special person to make a significant donation out of their own pocket, and as both a resident and employee of the City, Corrie’s kind act has made us very proud.

“We commend her for her wonderful good deed and would also like to extend our gratitude to organisations like Swan City Youth Service that consistently deliver much-needed services to vulnerable people.”

The City has also implemented a number of initiatives to assist vulnerable residents including working with Midlas and Foodbank WA to deliver food hampers and distributing bottled water across the City using a donation from The Water Corporation.
