The $192 million transformation of Geraldton Health Campus is complete and delivering quality care.
Following the opening of the new emergency department in August, the new intensive care unit and high dependency unit, psychiatric intensive care unit and adult mental health inpatient unit are now being used by Mid West patients.
Clinical teams have been preparing care pathways to ensure a smooth transition for patients to move into new clinical spaces, as well as updating wayfinding and support systems for families and loved ones.
An important hub for healthcare across the Mid West, the hospital has also welcomed more than 150 new staff with appointments to key clinical roles in a range of specialties.
Elsewhere on campus, a $2 million expansion of the hospital’s renal dialysis unit is set to welcome back patients later this year with the construction of the new radiation oncology unit expected to be completed in 2027.
These projects form part of the largest healthcare building program in Western Australia’s history, a record $5.5 billion commitment to expanding health infrastructure by the Cook Labor Government.
The delivery of the new radiation oncology unit includes a $12.6 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government.
As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
“I’m extremely pleased to announce that the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment is now fully operational.
“The transition of services to the new facilities is the final – and most important – milestone in the delivery of this major redevelopment.
“This is the culmination of thousands of hours of effort from specialists right across our health system for the betterment of patients, families and carers in the Mid West.
“Importantly, The Cook Labor Government is delivering more than just an increase to hospital capacity – the new intensive care unit and high dependency unit and integrated mental health services are ensuring more of our Mid West patients can remain in care close to home, their support networks and loved ones.
“Expanding local access to specialist emergency, intensive care, mental health, renal and oncology services for people in the Mid West remains a key priority for the Cook Labor Government.”
As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:
“With the transformation of the hospital now complete, we’re pushing ahead with the delivery of the new radiation oncology unit, which will deliver life-saving cancer treatments closer to home for people across the Mid West.
“The redevelopment of Geraldton Health Campus was the most significant investment into the hospital in more than 20 years, under the last Labor Government.
The Cook Labor Government’s record $5.5 billion investment in health infrastructure is delivering more capacity and better services right across the State – meaning more Western Australians can receive the healthcare they need, close to where they live.”
