Learner drivers now have the option to take their test online with a more comprehensive education program that allows them to learn in their own time before getting behind the wheel.
The new online learner driver education program myLs came online this week and focuses on road safety, driver attitudes and behaviours and road rules.
Completion of the interactive online course, which will take between 4-6 hours, will be offered as an alternative to attending and sitting the test in-person for anyone looking to obtain their Learner’s Permit.
Service SA has applied learnings from other states when designing and implementing myLs with online learner driver education and testing having already been successfully implemented in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania.
All learner drivers are still required to complete mandatory supervised driving hours and pass a practical driving test to obtain a probationary licence.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the new option compliments the Marshall Liberal Government’s continued roll out of modernised digital services available at Service SA and provides a better introduction to the roads for budding drivers.
“It is vital that we prepare our newest drivers as best as we can, so they have the best possible understanding of our road rules and driving attitudes before they get behind the wheel themselves,” Minister Wingard said.
“Applicants will be able to complete the new online course at their own pace, including an online assessment and save their progress as they go.
“The new myLs program does much more than just teach road rules – it also shows novice drivers the trauma and devastation that happens too often on our roads.
“They will hear powerful real-life interviews with people affected by car crashes, who know only too well the tragedies that can unfold on our roads.
“We want to educate our young drivers so that when they do take to the roads they can make the best possible decisions, to reduce the number of lives lost and serious injuries on our roads.”
myLs utilises a modern online learning approach to bring together key road safety and driver education content.
It uses questions, activities, quizzes and challenges to re-inforce and embed learnings prior to a final assessment and gives novice drivers convenient access to information about driver attitudes, the effect of poor driving decisions, hazard identification and road rules.
After successfully completing the myLs online program users can then obtain their learner’s permit online.
Before starting the program, novice drivers will need to attend a Service SA Centre to establish their identity. They can then access myLs for up to 12 months at the same cost as the current test, with myLs allowing for repeated attempts of the final test if needed.
