The Commonwealth and Tasmanian governments will deliver on their promise to build a new Bridgewater Bridge.
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson said; “Tasmanians made their voices loud and clear at both the state and federal elections by voting in the Hodgman majority Liberal Government and Morrison Liberal and Nationals Government to deliver the Bridgewater Bridge.
“There is no question about the need for a new Bridgewater Bridge and its benefits to the entire state on the vital north-south route. It will be delivered and our expectation is motorists will be driving on the new Bridgewater Bridge in 2024.
“The question remains, does Tasmanian Labor and Shane Broad support this important project which Tasmanians have endorsed?” Minister Ferguson said.
The Tasmanian Government is investigating all options available to ensure the project is fit for purpose, the build cost can be met within current funding allocations and takes on board the Infrastructure Australia assessment.
“We are always open to taking on board advice from local government, but the funding is locked in for the Bridgewater Bridge project,” Minister Ferguson said.
“Unlike Labor governments of the past, we will spend the money on the bridge rather than blowing it on other projects,” he said.
Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said; “There are no barriers to the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government and Hodgman Liberal Government delivering on this important pledge, which has been discussed for more than two decades.
“We are delivering on this $576 million project, which will benefit the state now and for generations to come,” Mr McCormack said.
