Golf stars of future set to tee off in Logan

A field of future golfing talent will take part in one of Queensland’s largest championships for juniors in the City of Logan next week.

Logan City Council and Golf Australia have partnered to host the 2019 Queensland Boys’ and Girls’ Amateur Championship at Logan’s Carbrook Golf Club from Tuesday, July 2 to Friday, July 5.

More than 160 boys and girls from Queensland, interstate and overseas will contest one of Australia’s most prestigious junior golf tournaments.

The event plays a significant role in the development of potential future world top-ranked golfers and will showcase the best of golf’s junior talent.

A number of the field’s competitors are considered to be future golfing stars.

The City of Logan has a proud golfing history with former world No.1 golfer Jason Day being a product of Hills International College at Jimboomba.

Malaysian-born teen Zubair Firdaus, also a Hills College student and the college’s golf academy champion in 2018, will defend his title as the state’s Amateur Boys’ Champion.

Golf Australia’s Queensland State Manager Luke Bates said Carbrook was a great fit for the championships.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Logan City Council in delivering this key championship,” Mr Bates said.

The first two rounds the championships, next Tuesday and Wednesday, will be contested by 162 players.

A cut will then be made leaving the leading 50 boys and 20 girls (including ties) to battle for the championship trophies on Thursday and Friday.

A great initiative of the championship is the J&R McCracken Plate which enables those players who have missed the cut to compete in a separate event over the final two days, guaranteeing those players four rounds with their peers.

The championship is open to male and female amateur golfers under the age of 18, with a Golf Australia Handicap or international equivalent. Handicap limits apply for the championship.

2018 runner-up Cassie Porter (Peregian) is looking to go one better this year but will face stiff competition from RACV Royal Pines’ Hye Park who is the highest world ranked player in the field, having claimed the 2019 Australian Girls’ Amateur Championship in April.

Sanctuary Cove’s Isabelle Taylor was the 2018 Girls’ Champion but is no longer a junior player as she has turned 18.
