Good grants news for community groups in far north

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Minister for Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence The Honourable Shannon Fentiman

Community organisations in far north Queensland will share in over $585,000 from the latest round of grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF).

Member for Cairns Michael Healy shared the good news today and congratulated the 23 successful recipients.

“These grants deliver projects and services that really benefit our local community,” Mr Healy said.

“This valuable funding will be used for projects such as upgraded facilities for the AFL Cairns Junior Club and new equipment for Table Tennis Cairns.

“The Palaszczuk Government is extremely grateful for the role the organisations play in supporting minority groups, creating opportunities, and fostering community spirit and connectivity.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said across the State almost $11 million is going to 448 not-for-profit community groups in the latest round of the program.

“We want to support our fantastic community organisations to thrive,” Ms Lui said.

“It’s great to see the Marine Rescue in Douglas are able to purchase rescue vessel equipment, the Mossman Junior Rugby League Club will be able to upgrade their field turf and the Mareeba Mountain Goats will be able to construct a bike trail thanks to these grants.”

Paul Dixon, President, Cairns Model Aero Club said that the $34,500 would be used to install a shade cover at the club’s new permanent home.

“After 25 years, we have finally been given a permanent home for the club and we are doing a number of major construction and earthworks to the 46 hectare site. As we are based in Far North Queensland, shade is very important to protect our members and members of the community who use our facilities. The shade cover also needs to cyclone proof,” Mr Dixon said.

“This grant will be invaluable to us and we are extremely pleased to have been awarded the grant. This enables the club to grow and to be able to do so in a safe and sun smart way.

“Our new site is sanctioned by CASA (Civil Safety Aviation Authority) and this will encourage many other groups to make use our site including the scouts, air cadets, SES, QPS, local schools so this will of benefit to the whole community.”

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman reminded organisations that round 112 is open for applications until 31 October and that we are just one round away from 2022’s round 113 – the super round.

“Next year is an exciting year for the GCBF, with the first-time inclusion of a super round when grants of up to $100,000 will be up for grabs,” Minister Fentiman said.

“I can’t wait to see the fruits of the hard work of these community groups, with a little help from their GCBF grants, in the future.”
