GoPro choose Cairns for global product launch

Cairns has today hosted the global launch of a new product from action camera giant GoPro, with images of Queensland to be beamed to a worldwide audience of more than five million people.

Cairns was chosen as one of the first locations in the world to unveil the company’s newest camera, the GoPro Max, with 20 content creators travelling to Tropical North Queensland to get a first-hand demonstration of the new technology.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said Queensland was a natural fit to launch the product.

“Influencers are vital when it comes to marketing tourism destinations,” Ms Jones said.

“We support partnerships like this to make sure we’re marketing Cairns to the next generation of tourists.

“It’s hard to get a bad picture of Cairns – it’s one of the most picturesque destinations on the planet. It will be great to have GoPro in town, pumping out beautiful pictures of this region to lure more tourists to the Far North.”

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said influencers would get to try some of the best tourism experiences Cairns has to offer.

“Queensland is the perfect place to officially unveil this new camera to the world,” he said.

“Tropical North Queensland has awe-inspiring scenery where the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef sit side-by-side.

“This is the perfect environment to showcase the features of this new camera.

“Not only is GoPro’s newest product launched today, but Tourism and Events Queensland is hosting 20 content creators from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Netherlands to try out the new gear.

“They’ll be experiencing the best Cairns and Tropical North Queensland has to offer, including diving and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafting, skydiving, encountering wildlife and of course learning about the rich Indigenous heritage of the region and they walk through Mossman Gorge.

“These influencers will be using the GoPro Max to capture their experiences in Queensland and sharing them with a combined audience of more than five million people across their social media channels which is an amazing promotional opportunity for Queensland.

Tourism is vital to Tropical North Queensland’s economy, contributing an estimated $2.8 billion to the regional economy and supporting around 25,700 jobs.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen said the influencers’ images would capture the imagination of young people in the Chinese market who placed great value on the latest technology.

“We anticipate seeing stunning imagery that captures the essence of Tropical North Queensland while showcasing the capabilities of the new GoPro MAX on influential social media channels,” he said.

“This will target independent high-value travellers who will also want to travel to Tropical North Queensland to photograph the region’s spectacular scenery and experiences.”
