Council will seek public comment on developing the Mill Gardens and establishing a heritage trail link from the newly upgraded Greenpatch Camping Area to Norman Park in Gordonvale.
The Mill Gardens Concept Plan and Heritage Trail Project aims to provide connectively between Greenpatch and Gordonvale, and promote the history of town and the Mulgrave Sugar Mill.
The proposed Mill Gardens – located adjacent to the Gordonvale Railway Station, on the south side of the station and the eastern side of Mill St – would include landscaping, seating, pathways, viewing area of the Mulgrave Mill and interpretive signage showcasing the history of the mill and the sugar production process.
It would also incorporate the historic entry gates to the Mulgrave Mill – known as the Draper Gates – which would act as a prominent entry point for the heritage trail to Greenpatch.
The State Government has provided $600,000 in funding for the project through the Works for Queensland program, and Mulgrave Mill has committed $200,000 for the relocating of the entry gates and contribution to the development of the Mill Gardens.
The proposed pedestrian trail linking Norman Park to Greenpatch will also landscaping, seating and a range of interpretive signs showcasing the history of Gordonvale.
Council recently completed a significant upgrade to the Greenpatch Camping Area, however there is no sealed pedestrian access enabling visitors to walk to Gordonvale town.
Traditional owners will be included throughout the engagement process and they will also be welcome to participate in embedding their cultural stories into the interpretive signage and other aspects of the trail.
