Government own goal on volunteer fire fighters

Tasmanian Labor

This afternoon in Parliament the government again failed to rule out a secret agenda to close down volunteer fire brigades across Tasmania.

This morning Mark Shelton fudged his response when asked a question in the House and this afternoon he has refused the opportunity to correct the record.

In what amounts to a massive own goal, the government voted down an amendment by Labor MP Jen Butler to a motion moved by the government on the state’s firefighting services.

“If government had supported my amendment, it would have committed them to no closures of Tasmanian Volunteer Fire Brigades by stealth or forced amalgamation.

“The government’s failure to support the amendment demonstrates that it is pursuing a secret agenda to close volunteer fire brigades.

“The government is providing no certainty to Tasmania’s 5,000 volunteer fire fighters.

“These firefighters are our most valuable weapon in keeping communities safe.”
