In order to protect some of the most vulnerable people across our state, the Victorian Labor Government should place a moratorium on housing evictions for the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
The pandemic will inevitably create economic hardship for many people and it is vital that the Government makes a plan for those at risk of losing their homes in the coming months.
It is also very important that no-one is disconnected from essential utilities such as electricity, water and the internet.
Today during question time, Minister Jennings said the Government shared the Greens’ concerns and that they would consider the powers available to them to avoid any “adverse outcomes”.
Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, welcomed Jennings’ response and encouraged the Government to follow the examples set in other jurisdictions that have acted decisively to protect peoples’ homes and address the risk of those experiencing homelessness.
For those already experiencing homelessness in Victoria, the Government should explore the option of ensuring safe accommodation in emptying hotels and motels during this time.
As stated by Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:
“This pandemic will affect Victorians in unprecedented ways and those experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes will be some of the hardest hit.
“It is vital that the Victorian Labor Government give these communities peace of mind by banning evictions for the period of this emergency and ensuring no-one is disconnected from essential utilities.
“Those currently experiencing homelessness should be housed in our emptying hotels and motels during this time.
“We appreciate that the Government is needing to make very difficult decisions on a daily, if not hourly basis, but it is important that the most vulnerable members of our community aren’t forgotten or left behind.”
