Government working with community sector on youth justice reform

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Rockliff Liberal Government is developing a therapeutic approach to youth justice in line with recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch met with TasCOSS in November about our next steps for the closure of Ashley Youth Detention Centre and youth justice reform more generally.

“It was a very productive meeting and I have invited TasCOSS and members to visit Ashley in line with our Government’s commitment to increase access, insight and transparency in day-to-day centre operations,” Minister Jaensch said.

“In November, I made it clear to TasCOSS that the Government welcomes their advice to assist with the implementation of the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry and our Youth Justice Blueprint.

“Our Government will continue to collaborate with the community services sector on the reforms and recommendations.”

The Final Draft Youth Justice Blueprint 2022-23 is a multi-systemic response to youth justice in Tasmania across the next 10 years.

“The Draft Blueprint outlines our strategic direction with the aim of improving the wellbeing of children, young people and their families while addressing the underlying drivers of offending behaviours, reducing offending and improving community safety,” Minister Jaensch said.

“The Draft Blueprint was informed by the previously released Reforming Tasmania’s Youth Justice System: Discussion Paper and extensive consultation by Noetic between December 2021 and April 2022.

“To support the implementation of the Blueprint, the Government will shortly convene a Community Consultative Committee which will include a range of stakeholders and organisations.

“Our Government is committed to working with community organisations and stakeholders to strengthen the supports and therapeutic interventions provided to young people to prevent contact with the youth justice system.”
