Work is underway to build a new sewage treatment plant at Gloucester.
The new facility will be constructed next to the existing sewage treatment plant on Showground Road and is expected to be up and running by early 2029.
MidCoast Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott, said the facility would cater for customers in Gloucester and Barrington well into the future.
“Gloucester’s existing sewage treatment plant is at the end of its operational lifespan and needs to be replaced,” said Mr Scott.
“The plant was built back in the 1930s and has served the local population well, but unfortunately as time has gone on the infrastructure has deteriorated and it’s become increasingly difficult for us to meet our regulatory requirements with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
“The new facility has been designed to comply with the latest environmental standards and will accommodate continued growth in the area.”
Work on the project has already begun, with contractors currently establishing the site and undertaking important preliminary work.
Construction is expected to begin later this year.
Mr Scott said the project was the latest investment into improving Gloucester’s water and sewer systems, following the successful completion of the Gloucester Water Upgrade in 2024. That project addressed historical issues with the water supply network in the town and delivered two new reservoirs on Cemetery Road.
“It’s important that we continue to upgrade the infrastructure in Gloucester to ensure residents are receiving a modern standard of service and that the town is well equipped for the future,” said Mr Scott.
