Greens call for investment in pop-up bike lanes on World Bicycle Day

Australian Greens

The Victorian Greens have called on the state government to immediately invest in pop-up bike lanes around greater Melbourne to help people practice social distancing and safely return to work.

The Greens made the call after cycling into parliament this morning to mark World Bicycle Day.

St Kilda Road, Sydney Road and Flemington Road should be priority sites for temporary cycling infrastructure during the COVID-19 crisis given the increasing number of cyclists now using them.

Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins, said the state government needed to stop prioritising polluting projects like the $16 billion dollar North East Link and instead invest some of that money into active transport.

He added that it would not only reduce our state’s carbon emissions but also help to create much-needed jobs.

As stated by Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins MP:

“Governments around the world are creating more space for cyclists in response to COVID-19, but in Victoria it’s clear that the state government doesn’t have a plan to allow people to safely return to work.

“The government urgently needs to put in pop-up bike lanes across greater Melbourne starting with St Kilda Road, Sydney Road and Flemington Road.

“Their failure to invest a single dollar in pop-up bike lanes stands in contrast with their decision to go ahead with the $16 billion dollar North East Link this week.”
