Greens Win New School For Belconnen Town Centre

Australian Greens

The ACT Greens have today won parliamentary support for a new primary and secondary school in Belconnen Town Centre.

“The ACT Greens want Canberra to be a liveable city where kids can walk and ride to school. Currently, there is no school in the Belconnen Town Centre – one of the fastest growing areas of Canberra,” said ACT Greens MLA for Ginninderra, Jo Clay.

“Today I called on my Legislative Assembly colleagues to commit to a new school in the Belco town centre and I’m really pleased to have secured tri-partisan support.

“The Belco community has been calling for a school in the town centre for years and I was really pleased to take on this initiative on behalf of our community.

“Now that we’ve got this commitment, we need to keep a strong Greens presence in the Assembly next term to make sure the government gets on with the job.

“The ACT Greens are committed to working with the people of Canberra and this initiative demonstrates how we can deliver as your elected representatives.

“This commitment provides more certainty for families already in Belconnen and those looking to move to the area, with Belconnen set to grow by more than 3,000 new homes over the next decade.

“Soon Belconnen Town Centre will have more than 11,500 homes, which is more than Goulburn. The township of Goulburn has 9 primary schools.

“I thank my colleagues who backed this motion and will continue to advocate for a more walkable and liveable Belconnen and Canberra,” Ms Clay said.

Today’s Greens motion commits the ACT Government to building a primary and secondary school in the Town Centre, subject to a feasibility study.
