Ground rules for drone use

South Australia Police are reminding the public about recreational drone use laws after several near-miss incidents involving aircraft.

Recently police have received reports from across the State of incidents where drones were flown too close to aircraft and people during crowded events.

Though accidents with were narrowly avoided in reports, the increase of drone use requires a reminder about the rules.

When flying a drone, remember:

* Never fly a drone over anyone. This includes over places like festivals, sporting events, populated beaches, busy roads and pedestrians on footpaths.

* Drones need to be flown at least 30m away from people.

* You can only fly one drone at a time and no higher than 120m off the ground.

* Drones can only be flown during daylight hours however not through cloud of fog.

SA Police urges recreational drone users to familiarise themselves with the full rules via the Civil Aviation Safety Authority website at https://www.casa.gov.au/knowyourdrone

Failure to comply with rules and restrictions may result in fines.
