Gutwein’s dud GST deal set to cost Tasmania hundreds of millions

Tasmanian Labor

Today the stark reality of Peter Gutwein’s dud GST deal has been revealed, with Treasury saying Tasmania could be set to lose hundreds of millions in GST revenue up until 2031-32.

Shadow Treasurer Shane Broad said under each of the new scenarios modelled by Treasury Tasmania will be hundreds of millions of dollars worse off.

“In Treasury’s own words this loss of GST income means 1000’s of teachers, nurses or police jobs would be unfunded,” Dr Broad said.

“It begs the question, why did Peter Gutwein sign up to such a dud deal? And what are Tasmania’s Federal Liberals going to do about it?

“It’s all well and good to put out a press release calling for our fair share, but the fact is it was Mr Gutwein who signed us up to this deal.”

Dr Broad said at a time when the public housing waitlist continued to grow, our roads are potholed and thousands of people are living in pain waiting for surgery, Tasmania could be set to lose key funding.

“Mr Gutwein can try and spin his way out of this all he likes but the only way he can fix this problem is if he stands up to the Prime Minister, admits his mistake and demands our fair share.”
