Rebuilding the Canterbury Sports Ground pavilion

Families in Melbourne’s inner east are set to benefit from a much-needed upgrade to Canterbury Sports Ground, with the Victorian Liberals and Nationals today committing $1 million in funding to contribute to the construction of a new pavilion.

Currently, the pavilion and surrounds are subject to flooding and don’t provide a suitable area for spectators to enjoy the action during football and cricket games.

A Matthew Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will ensure better access for players and supporters, while encouraging participation in women’s sport by delivering better change room facilities.

Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy, said it was important to continue to invest in grassroots projects.

“The current facility simply doesn’t fit the demands of a popular suburban oval,” Mr Guy said.

“Sporting clubs are set to play an integral role as communities begin to recover and rebuild. This investment by the Liberals and Nationals backs grassroots sport and provides local residents and families with a facility to be proud of.”

Surrey Hills and Canterbury communities will benefit from the upgrades, with the new multi-purpose venue doubling as a community hub to be utilised by local groups.

Liberal Candidate for Hawthorn, John Pesutto, said the upgrades would boost participation in sport and recreational activities.

“I’m grateful to have worked with club stakeholders and residents to proactively address their concerns and make this commitment. Mr Pesutto said.

“We’ve listened to the community which has identified the need for these upgrades to be completed. Only a Matthew Guy led Liberals and Nationals Government will deliver this for the local community.”
