Hands Oval redevelopment funding agreement signed

  • McGowan Government signs $8 million financial assistance agreement
  • New facility in Bunbury will host year-round events
  • Construction expected to be completed by mid-2024

Construction can now commence on the Hands Oval Pavilion redevelopment project after the McGowan Government signed off on its $8 million financial assistance agreement with the City of Bunbury.

The existing facility is being demolished and a new pavilion will be constructed featuring sustainable, inclusive, multi-purpose sports facilities and grandstand seating.

On completion, Hands Oval will be able to accommodate year-round sport, recreation and community activity including major events, and will be capable of accommodating pre-season AFL and AFLW games.

Total funding for the project is $17.42 million with other contributions from the Australian Government, the City of Bunbury, and the South West Football League.

Construction is expected to be completed by May 2024.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“Hands Oval in Bunbury has long had a strong reputation in the region as a premier Australian football facility and this redevelopment will add a new chapter in its history.

“The redevelopment will not only provide great multi-purpose sports facilities but will also offer an enhanced spectator experience.

“Sport, recreation and community activities play an integral role in local communities, and this new facility will help to better meet the needs of this vibrant and sport-loving region.”

As stated by Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

“I’m delighted to see this project moving forward – it has been a long time coming and I have fought hard to see it come to fruition.

“Sport makes such an important contribution to our community and these works will ensure that the facility is inclusive and accessible for all.

“I’m looking forward to seeing construction commence and can’t wait until the works are finished next year.”
