Happy 160th Queensland – Go Another Day in Maroon

Game One of Origin is over but Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is urging all Queenslanders to go another day in maroon.

Today is Queensland’s 160th birthday.

“I know the game was last night but today is our real State of Origin Day,” the Premier said.

“June 6, 1859 was the day we separated from New South Wales.

“I’m not sure everyone down south got the memo which is why we have to celebrate our Independence Day.

“We have to celebrate Queensland Day.”

Landmarks from the Qantas Founders Museum in the west, to the Big Crab and the Big Mango in the north to the Fourex Brewery and the Gold Coast’s Skypoint Observation Deck in the south will light up maroon in honour of our special day.

The Premier will also host the investiture of the Queensland Greats.

These inspirational Queenslanders include Professor Ian Frazer who developed the world’s first vaccine to protect against cervical cancer, Rod Laver, Steve Irwin journalists Kerry O’Brien and Phil Dickie and the King, Wally Lewis to name a few.

This year inductees include the Queensland Country Women’s Association.

“Drought, flood and every day in between, the members of the QCWA are there to help,” the Premier said.

“They were vital distributing the millions of dollars raised in our Queensland Drought Appeal.

“They’re the kind of people who make Queensland truly great.”

The 2019 Queensland Greats will be revealed at a ceremony in Brisbane tonight.
