‘Harmonic tour de force’ wins Contemporary Wearables ’21 Jewellery Award

A 42-piece sculptural collection described as a ‘harmonic tour de force’ has been judged the winner of Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery’s Contemporary Wearables ’21 Biennial Jewellery Award.

Florilegium …traversing the poetry of plants, which was designed by former Toowoomba resident Sarah Rayner and Sophie Carnell of Tasmania, was awarded the $6000 first prize. The collection also was acquired for the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery – Toowoomba City Collection.

Florilegium is a series of 42 sculptural brooches, paired in porcelain and silver and attached directly to the gallery wall.

Leading Australian contemporary jeweller and Contemporary Wearables ’21 judge Barbara Heath labelled the winning entry a ‘harmonic tour de force’.

Ms Heath said she used a judging methodology incorporating five aspects, including the text, the make, the look, the finesse and the wearability of the entries. An equal weighting was applied to each aspect to assess and score each work.
