Harmony Week and International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Department of Home Affairs

This week, Australians will come together to mark Harmony Week, culminating in the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination today.

This year, this week coincides with a number of significant cultural celebrations including Lent, Nowruz, Purim and Ramadan. The Albanese Government is committed to celebrating our multicultural diversity, which is underpinned by a zero tolerance approach to racism.

During a difficult time for some of our communities, Harmony Week this year may serve as a reminder of multiculturalism and diversity as one of our greatest strengths as a nation. In these times, it’s crucial to remember the shared value of respect, unity, and compassion that underpin our multicultural nation, and to reflect on how these principles can guide us towards peace and understanding.
