Victoria has named its 12-player squad for the third round of the Sheffield Shield against Queensland at the Gabba, beginning on Saturday, October 31.
Reigning Bill Lawry Medallist, Sam Harper, returns following his involvement in Australia’s recent tour of South Africa. Harper will be looking to build on last year’s campaign, where the 29-year-old scored an outstanding 677 runs.
Mitch Perry has been included in the squad following his impressive performance in Victoria’s recent Dean Jones Trophy clash against Tasmania, claiming Player of the Match honours after a devastating spell of 4/9.
Matt Hennig has also been included in his maiden Sheffield Shield squad, after making his List A debut for Victoria last week.
Liam Blackford retains his place following an impressive innings of 80 against Tasmania, which nearly guided Victoria to a miraculous victory in Hobart.
Experienced opener Marcus Harris will enter the contest in strong form, having registered back-to-back half-centuries.
Harry Hoekstra has been rested, while David Moody has been omitted from the squad. Matt Short is unavailable as he undergoes a hip procedure, which is expected to sideline him for four to five weeks.
Victoria’s Head of Male Cricket, Wade Seccombe, said the returning players would provide a valuable boost ahead of the trip to Brisbane.
“It’s great to welcome Sam back into the group following his time with the Australian squad in South Africa,” Seccombe said.
“He brings valuable experience and quality to our batting line-up, while Mitch and Matt have earned their opportunities following strong performances in the One-Day Cup.
“Mitch’s spell against Tasmania was outstanding, and it’s exciting to see him carry that form into our red-ball squad.
“We were also really pleased with Liam’s determination against Tasmania. His innings showed great character and maturity, and he continues to make the most of his opportunities at this level.
“The Gabba is always a challenging place to play, and we’ll need to be disciplined and consistent across the four days.”
