A popular pedestrian route linking Lawarence Hargrave Drive and Austinmer Beach, has been reinstated with a stairway, handrails and refreshed landscaping.
The project was supported by the NSW Essential Public Assets Restoration Natural Disaster Grant Program. The funding supported the replacement of the storm damaged stairs following a declared disaster event. The storm caused erosion, geotechnical instability and structural failure of the coastal footpath, stairs and adjacent slope.

“We’re pleased to see the completion of works at Austinmer for this well-used and much-loved pathway,” Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
“Located on the headland overlooking the beach and rockpools, Council navigated the coastal footpath’s unique environment in design and construction to restore access. The works have stabilised the embankment, rebuilding a more resilient asset that can service the community for many years to come.
“It also links up with other recent works on the Grand Pacific Walk pathway that takes people around the headland to connect to the pathway at Kennedy’s Hill.
“We remain committed to maintaining our infrastructure that meets our community’s everyday needs. We hope locals and visitors enjoy the coastal connection, which has reopened just in time for summer.”
