The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Wollongong City Council to create a new suburb named Stream Hill and amend the suburb boundary of Kembla Grange.
Acting Chair of the Geographical Names Board Thomas Grinter said the Board was encouraging community comment before considering the proposal.
“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed suburb name and amendment,” Mr Grinter said.
“It is important that suburb boundaries are easily identified and interpreted by the community to prevent confusion.”
Stream Hill is the name of one of the oldest farmhouses in the area and is a listed heritage item within the Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009.
The homestead is on land which was one of the ten veteran land grants awarded to military men in West Dapto from 1829 as an incentive for service.
It was given to Private Joseph Harris in 1832 as thanks for his time in the Army where he served under Captain Charles Sturt charting river systems.
The area retained as Kembla Grange will continue to be dominated by industrial uses and includes the Kembla Grange Racecourse and other key community facilities that bear the name of the suburb.
Suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.

Written submissions can also be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 27 May 2022.
