The NSW Department of Planning and Environment is asking for community feedback on a new Qantas Flight Training Centre in Mascot, with a proposal now on public exhibition until 4 July 2019.
Anthea Sargeant, Executive Director Key sites and Industry Assessments said the project is considered a State Significant Development application, so it is important the community take the opportunity to have their say.
“To ensure a thorough planning assessment, we are asking community members and interested groups to review the proposal and submit their feedback.”
The draft plans, including the Environmental Impact Statement, propose:
- a new training hall
- an emergency procedures hall
- teaching rooms
- office space
- demolition works
- construction of a multi-level car park
- necessary internal road work and landscaping.
The need for the new training facility has arisen as part of the proposed Sydney Gateway Project, which aims to improve connections to Port Botany and Sydney Airport by increasing local road and rail capacity and provide an alternative route to the domestic and international airport terminals.
“In January 2019, the Independent Planning Commission advised Qantas’ proposal should proceed as State Significant Development noting the Project is critical to maintaining aviation safety regulations and legislative requirements and has arisen in response to the proposed Gateway project,” Ms Sargeant said.
As part of the Gateway Project, Qantas Drive will be widened, which will require the partial demolition of Qantas’ existing flight training centre, with the new facility proposed to be constructed close to the existing site to allow Qantas to continue its operations.
