The community is being encouraged to have its say on a WaterNSW proposal that would future-proof the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley against flooding by raising the Warragamba Dam wall.
A Department of Planning, Industry and Environment spokesperson said the community was invited to give feedback until Friday, 12 November 2021.
“The community’s views will be essential to the project’s assessment and its important people take the time to provide us with their comprehensive feedback,” the spokesperson said.
“The community are able to submit feedback on the proposal through the Department’s Planning Portal website.”
“WaterNSW will be required to respond to any issues raised by the community, before we can finalise our rigorous and comprehensive assessment.”
The proposal includes raising the dam wall by 14 metres, to temporarily store floodwaters upstream and hold them back from the Warragamba catchment, before releasing them in a controlled manner.
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment will assess the project against the requirements of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and other legislation.
The proposal would also require Commonwealth approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 in order to proceed.
