The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will continue hazard reduction burns in Murramarang National Park on the South Coast, Thursday, 19 August 2021.
NPWS Area Manager Michael Phelan said fire crews are taking advantage of the current window of favourable conditions.
“We are using this opportunity to undertake a second hazard reduction burn in Murramarang National Park to help protect the community of Longbeach from potential bushfire,” Mr Phelan said.
“The 100-hectare burn will take place just north of the Longbeach township and will help to reduce fuel loads in the area and maintain biodiversity in the national park.
“This strategic, low intensity burn will also protect critical communications infrastructure.
“Some walking trails will be closed during the operation and locals should check NPWS Alerts before visiting the park.
“The Princes Highway and other roads in the area will remain open however motorists are advised that smoke may impact visibility and they should drive to conditions.
“Motorists should also obey all safety signage and follow directions of fire crews,” Mr Phelan said.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service.
Hazard reductions are an essential activity under the current Public Health Orders and will be conducted in a COVID-19 safe manner to ensure the safety of fire crews and the community.
COVID-19 safety briefings are provided to all staff who are required to wear masks along with their normal fire personal protective equipment. Contact tracing is also enabled via the QR code sign-in all fire crews must complete when starting.
