Health courses most popular as uni offers go live

Aspiring doctors, nurses and medical researchers are among more than 12,000 South Australian students receiving a university offer today.

A total of 12,641 offers will arrive in inboxes in the main round of offers, after Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) scores for the Class of 2021 were released last week.

Medicine and health proved the most popular area of study with 4,635 successful applicants, followed by humanities, social sciences and religious studies, education and teaching, business and economics and engineering.

Minister for Education John Gardner congratulated all those entering university next year.

“This is a wonderful achievement and every student receiving an offer today should be incredibly proud,” said Minister Gardner.

“There are so many fantastic career opportunities on offer right here in SA and I’m excited to see thousands of young South Australians transition into this next phase of learning to become our future generations of engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers and researchers.

“Many of those receiving offers today are school students from the Class of 2021, who completed their senior secondary years during a pandemic.

“I have no doubt the resilience and determination they’ve shown will stand them in good stead for the exciting opportunities that now lie ahead of them.

“These challenging and unprecedented times may have even inspired some to explore a career in health and join this vital workforce.”

The South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) has already made 2991 offers in earlier offer rounds from August to early December, bringing the total number of offers for 2022 to 15,632. 11,580 students received a place in their first preference course.

Minister Gardner said those who didn’t receive their first university preference shouldn’t be discouraged.

“Don’t be disheartened. There are still plenty of pathways out there to lead you to your dream career,” said Minister Gardner.

The next round of university offers will be made on January 14.
