The winter season is a busy time for our Emergency Departments, but simple steps like knowing which treatment option is the most suitable for your needs can help ease pressure on hospitals.
To help Tasmanians be informed about where to go to get the treatment they need, the Tasmanian Government’s “Know Your Treatment Options” campaign is now live.
Campaign advertisements will run in newspapers, on local radio and on social media throughout winter to inform the Tasmanian community about which options are available and when they should be used.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the campaign assures Tasmanians that although emergency care is always available for those who need it, it’s important to access the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
“We know that demand is increasing in our hospitals, and while we are responding with immediate actions, Tasmanians can also help by choosing the most appropriate health care for their needs,” Minister Archer said.
“If you have an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) or go to the nearest Emergency Department. Our dedicated staff at Ambulance Tasmania and in our hospital Emergency Departments will be there to care for you.
“But if it’s not an emergency, there are a range of more suitable options available across the State.
“A good first step is calling healthdirect on 1800 022 222 to speak to a registered nurse. The nurse will ask about your symptoms and guide you to the right care.
“This might involve community-based health services such as Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, GPs, pharmacies, virtual care, and mental health support services which can offer advice and treatment for non-emergency care needs.”
Medicare Urgent Care Clinics are available if Tasmanians have an urgent health need that cannot wait for a regular appointment with a GP.
“Medicare UCCs are bulk billed, with no cost to patients. The Medicare UCCs in Bridgewater, Burnie, Devonport, Hobart, Kingston, Launceston and Sorell are open 7 days a week,” Minister Archer said.
