Helping venues make most of their space

More than 75 licensed venues across South Australia have been able to expand their footprint, under moves aimed at helping the hospitality sector make the most of easing restrictions on the size of public gatherings.

Attorney-General, Vickie Chapman said the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner had been allowing licensed venues to apply for a short-term extension since late May.

“Licensed venues have been hit hard by public health measures aimed at minimising the spread of the coronavirus,” Attorney-General Chapman said.

“While these measures were absolutely necessary, it has meant venues have either only been able to trade in a very limited capacity and – in some cases – not at all.

“By allowing venues to take these short term measures to increase their capacity while maintaining appropriate social distancing precautions, we are helping these businesses make the most of eased restrictions.”

Attorney-General Chapman said that, as at the end of yesterday, more than 109 applications have been lodged with CBS, with 77 extensions granted.

“This demonstrates our clear commitment to supporting the hospitality sector through this difficult time,” Ms Chapman said.

“Of the applications that have not proceeded, an extension was not required in the vast majority of cases.”

Ms Chapman said 40 of the approved applications were from venues based in regional South Australia.

“Pubs, hotels and licensed venues in regional areas are an integral part of the local community – not only do they serve as a place for locals to socialise, they’re also a major drawcard for tourists.

“And while border restrictions are in place, these measures can help venues take advantage of intrastate tourism during this difficult time.

“Importantly, most applications received are processed within one to two business days, ensuring venues can open with their expanded footprint as quick as possible.”
