High school students take to arena for robotics playoffs

  • Western Australian Robotics Playoffs have returned to Curtin Stadium
  • The two-day event combines robots, an ag-tech showcase and high-tech careers expo
  • Western Australian high school students have stepped into the arena over the weekend to put their robotic creations to the test and flex their innovation prowess.

The Western Australian Robotics Playoffs brings together students to hone their technology skills while showcasing high-tech career opportunities, including WA’s primary industries sector.

Teams of students have built robots to compete in three-on-three basketball rounds, creating an exciting spectacle as robots clash, tactics emerge and teams form alliances to gain the most points.

The robotics event has expanded this year to include a technology and careers expo, career talks by industry professionals and an Innovation Challenge, sponsored by the WA Government, where students investigate a real-life primary industries problem and present solutions.

The Agriculture and Food Minister presented the inaugural Innovation Challenge Trophy to Peter Carnley Anglican Community School.

The two-day event is a collaboration between the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Curtin University and Murdoch University.

As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“It is fantastic to see such bright young minds come together to create new innovations, problem solve challenges and ponder future career prospects.

“A key focus of the event is increasing awareness of the diverse opportunities within WA’s primary industries and change perceptions of what a career in this industry can look like.

“The use of technology in primary industries is increasing – robots, drones and driverless vehicles are being developed and are increasingly being used to optimise efficiency and cost effectiveness.

“Careers in primary industry are also evolving, with opportunities in a huge range of occupations.

“This is a new event and we look forward to seeing it grow year on year.”
