High visibility operation conducted in Sorell

Tasmania Police along with the Department of State Growth Transport Safety and Investigation Unit conducted a high visibility traffic operation at Sorell yesterday.

Inspector Jon Cooper from the East Coast Division said that about 350 motorists were pulled over and subject to either a random breath or drug test and vehicle safety check.

Offences detected during the operation included:

  • 3 x positive drug tests
  • 1 x speeding
  • 1 x insecure load
  • 22 x vehicle defect notices.
  • 1 x unregistered large farm tractor (unregistered for over 7 years) being used on the roadway

“Common defects discovered today include bald tyres, non-functioning lighting, and unsafe vehicle damage.”

“We are reminding road users of the need to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and safe to operate at all times.”

“It is disappointing that from nearly 1 in 10 vehicles pulled over, an issue arose with either the driver or the vehicle itself.”

“We will continue to conduct high visibility operations in the future to ensure all road users are accountable for their actions and to keep the Tasmanian community safe.”
