Moira Shire Council voted, at the May ordinary meeting, to allocate a one-off donation of $20,000 to Stage 2 of the Albury Wodonga Cancer Centre’s ‘Hilltop’ accommodation project.
Mayor Libro Mustica said the first stage of this project was completed in 2012, with the facility providing 20 modern motel style rooms with ensuites, lounge and kitchenette facilities.
“Over the past two years the Hilltop accommodation centre has provided 3,589 ‘bed nights’ to 151 families battling cancer from Moira Shire alone,” Cr Mustica said.
“Hilltop is focussed on ensuring the centre continues to be able to provide these comfortable, friendly and convenient accommodation facilities for cancer patients and their carers at what is otherwise an extremely difficult and stressful time.”
Cr Mustica said Stage 2 of this project has now commenced which includes the construction of 10 additional rooms, with occupation anticipated by August this year.
“This second stage is critical as the Hilltop accommodation centre has been so successful, it is now frequently full, but the demand is still growing,” he said.
“With so many of our families in Moira requiring cancer treatment, going to Albury is a wonderful option for them instead of having to travel to Melbourne.
“I am delighted Council agreed to donate to this very worthy project, one that clearly benefits so many families in Moira Shire and the broader region.”
