One of West Wyalong’s most recognisable landmarks has been officially unveiled following a major restoration project, with the iconic DC-3 Dakota aircraft now restored to its former glory at Lions Park.
The project was supported by The Nationals in 2022 with $167,670 through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 5, enabling Bland Shire Council to undertake extensive structural repairs, paint restoration, site improvements, and the installation of new lighting.
Nationals Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, said she is proud to have supported the project, noting that the aircraft is often the first thing locals and visitors see upon arrival in town.
“West Wyalong has a long and proud history of honouring our country’s military and aviation history, and it was important to the former government that we supported their efforts with the funding required to preserve this incredible aircraft,” Ms Cooke said.
“There has been a lot of anticipation leading up to the official opening, and the community has had a front-row ticket to watching elements of this project come together. Not just the aircraft restoration, but upgrades to the supporting amenities.”
“I hope the community can be very proud of what has been achieved here over the past three to four years.”
Having served with both the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Australian Navy, the DC-3 represents an important chapter in Australia’s military heritage.
The restoration has been a significant undertaking and is the result of strong collaboration between Bland Shire Council, the RAAF Heritage Restoration Team, local businesses, and tradespeople, who all played a role in protecting this important piece of local history.
“The completed works will help secure the aircraft’s future as both a major tourist attraction and a source of community pride, ensuring the Dakota remains a prominent feature of West Wyalong for years to come,” Ms Cooke said.
“This ceremony provides an opportunity for the community to celebrate all of the hard work and dedication that have gone into preserving this landmark and the defence history it represents.”
The unveiling follows the recent opening of Bland RSL Memorial Walk, further demonstrating the community’s strong commitment to preserving and celebrating its military legacy.
