Hoard pop up exhibition brightens up wall

An exciting initiative from Bass Coast Shire Council will see 28 artists supported to install 28 artworks, transforming the fence surrounding the Cowes Cultural and Community Centre construction site over the next 14 months.

Hoard – a Pop Up is an exhibition designed by Council, working with Phillip Island Contemporary Exhibition Space Inc. (PICES), who will curate two exhibitions of 14 artists over the period leading up to the opening of the new Cultural and Community Centre.

The first stage of the exhibition has now begun, with the current 14 artworks to remain in place until the end of September. The second stage of the exhibition will run from the start of October, through until April 2023.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan, said that this project will create a real point of interest in Cowes while construction is underway on the new Cultural and Community Centre.

“Our team has set up the blue frames ready for PICES to work with local business Archisign and the 28 talented artists. It’s a great collaboration,” Cr Whelan said.

“The exhibition brings a plain plywood wall to life with colour and interest and we’re really pleased to be supporting this wonderful opportunity for artists to showcase their work, after a difficult two years for the creative sector.”

The participating artists were chosen for the exhibition independently of Council, by a selection panel put together by PICES.

The artists chosen to showcase their work are Andrew Kasper, Bill Binks, Carolyne Jane, Ian Pascoe, Janie Frith, John Mutsaers, Jolande Anastasi, Joseph Hsien, Josephine Allen, Lana de Jager, Lloyd Pereira, Lois Green, Lynda Horsborough, Mae Adams, Mandy Gunn, Marian Quigley, Mark Schaller, Marlene Abela, Michelangelo Russo and Jennifer Jabu, Mick Turner, Owen Rye, Peter Walker, Robert Barron, Sue Gilford, Sue Hoare, Susan Hall, Trevor Foon, and Wendy Habraken-Flack.

“It was also great to be able to involve local business Archisign in this project, who have printed and installed the images for the exhibition,” Cr Whelan concluded.
