Homelessness Taskforce Supports Shoalhaven’s Most Vulnerable

Shoalhaven City Council is proud to be supporting The Shoalhaven Homelessness Taskforce in partnership with members of the community and industry representatives. The taskforce works concurrently to provide Council with strategic advice on homelessness issues at a Local Government level.

Mayor Amanda Findley, Chair of the Homelessness Taskforce, noted how important the taskforce is in addressing homelessness issues, developing options and assisting with the identification of preferred solutions as part of Council’s decision-making process.

“On any given night, there is between 100 – 375 people who are homeless in the Shoalhaven. I am humbled by the commitment, passion and support shown by taskforce members and Council staff who are working hard to address issues affecting our most vulnerable members of the community.” Mayor Amanda Findley said.

“Young people are one particular at-risk group, often juggling part-time or casual work to allow for study commitments or apprenticeships. Low wages and lack of affordable housing creates real livability and potential homelessness issues for youth in the Shoalhaven.

“Census data indicates that the average Shoalhaven rental costs are $299 – $349 a week. For a young person employed as a third-year apprentice with a weekly wage estimated at $525, affording appropriate housing whilst living sustainably can be difficult in the Shoalhaven.” Clr Findley noted.

The Shoalhaven Affordable Housing Strategy highlights the pressure impact from the Sydney housing market upon the local housing market, resulting in rental price hikes, scarcity issues, and an increasingly competitive rental application process. These combined factors are increasing the risk of homelessness for Shoalhaven residents.

Clr Findley is encouraging all Shoalhaven residents to get involved by offering a helping hand, “Shoalhaven Homeless Services are always looking for additional support, either through donations or volunteer work at our local homeless service providers.” Clr Findley said.
