- New sports hall is expected to be completed in 2028
The Cook Labor Government’s significant redevelopment of Como Secondary College has reached a major milestone, with the tender opening for Stage 1 of the $30 million project on 26 October.
Stage 1 will deliver a state-of-the-art sports hall with a fitness centre and changerooms.
The redevelopment will also include the conversion of the existing gymnasium into a performing arts space, a flexible area that can accommodate staff studies or student services and realignment of the oval.
The sports hall is expected to be completed in early 2028, with the remaining works to be delivered progressively within the next three years.
Stage 1 works have been designed by T&Z Architects, with the building contract expected to be awarded early 2027.
The redevelopment, which was a 2025 election commitment, forms part of the Cook Labor Government’s record investment of $6.4 billion in education infrastructure since 2017.
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
“The Cook Labor Government is committed to ensuring Western Australian students have access to high-quality education infrastructure, close to where they live.
“This major redevelopment will give students more opportunities to explore their passions and develop their skills in brand new facilities in Perth’s inner south.
“Our public schools are an integral part of their communities, and this significant investment in Como Secondary College will benefit students, staff and the wider school community.”
As stated by South Perth MLA Geoff Baker:
“These are the biggest upgrades to Como Secondary in over 50 years. The new gym will be awesome, and this will lead to other improvements, like the new performing arts space.
“We want Como Secondary to not just a be an excellent high school, but also the heart of our local community.”
