Lower Energy Bills For WA Social Housing Tenants

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Around 4,000 more social housing properties across regional and remote Western Australia will now receive energy efficiency upgrades.

New funding of $53.9 million under the expanded Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI) will deliver upgraded ceiling insulation to social housing properties.

The upgrades will:

  • improve household comfort
  • reduce energy consumption
  • lower electricity bills for tenants.

With some of the hottest weather in Australia, regional Western Australia needs properties that can stand up to extreme heat.

The new funding builds on the $63.2 million already invested to upgrade social housing properties across regional and remote Western Australia.

It will almost double the number of WA households already benefiting from the initiative and bring the total to around 8,000 homes.

With more than 2,200 homes already upgraded, the original program remains on track for completion by June 2027.

Nationally, SHEPI is investing $1.1 billion to improve the energy performance of more than 100,000 social housing properties across Australia.
