Hop on your bike and Ride2Work Day

National Ride2Work Day aims to support and encourage people to get active and enjoy a healthier commute by cycling to their place of work.

The annual event is run by Bicycle Network, and is being held on Wednesday 18 October 2023.

As many of us have found ourselves working from home over the past few years, Ride2Work Day is a great way to get active and connect with your colleagues. It’s all about getting together while kickstarting your day by hopping on a bike.

With the nice weather rolling in, it’s also a great opportunity to join thousands of other Australians set to take part and choose a new sustainable way of getting around.

Benefits of bike riding

There are many reasons why cycling is good for you and the environment. You can:

  • Save time – Peak-hour city trips up to 10km are generally faster by bike than any other form of transport. A 5km to 10km ride to work will only take 15 to 30 minutes on average.
  • Improve your health – By swapping the car, train or bus for a bike, you can get your recommended daily exercise.
  • A regular ride to work can help reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and depression.
  • Save money – People who ride to work can save between $6,000 and $15,000 which is usually spent on fuel, car repairs, public transport tickets and parking.
  • Limit carbon emissions – For every kilometre you ride a bike instead of a car, you can save more than 240 grams of carbon.

If you’re new to riding

If you’re riding to work for the first time, you might like to find somewhere off the road like a bike path or shared trail. You can find these by searching the find a bike or walking path webpage to plan a bike route.

Another tip is to chat to friends or work colleagues that live in the area and ask if you can ride to work together.

What we’re doing

Our Boroondara Bicycle Strategy is our plan for the next 10 years to:

  • improve bicycle infrastructure
  • increase and support the number of people using bicycles to travel.

Our aim is to deliver an integrated bicycle network that is:

  • safe
  • connected
  • protected
  • works well
  • appeals to bicycle users of all ages and abilities.

After extensive community engagement, research and analysis, the strategy was endorsed by Council in July 2022.

To help make riding an attractive or possible option for all residents, workers and visitors in Boroondara, the strategy includes a network of new and improved off-road paths and on-road connections, which provide access to a range of destinations.
