Horizon Power wins a Silver in prestigious APEC awards

  • Cutting-edge distributed energy resources trials in Carnarvon awarded a joint Silver in APEC Energy Smart Communities Initiative Best Practice Awards
  • The trials contribute to the McGowan Government’s Energy Transformation Strategy
  • Cutting-edge distributed energy resources (DER) technology trials involving about 80 Horizon Power customers in Carnarvon were awarded a joint Silver in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Smart Communities Initiative Best Practice Awards.

The purpose of the awards is to aid APEC economies in achieving their energy intensity reduction goals by disseminating best practices in buildings, transportation, smart grids, and green jobs.

As part of the three-year trials, which commenced in 2018, Horizon Power has fitted each of the participants’ systems with internet of things technology to gather solar and battery performance data.

Horizon Power will marry this data together with weather data, power station performance and network operation data.

The data collected will assist Horizon Power to explore the most economically efficient ways to design and manage a future grid with high levels of distributed energy resources, reduce dependence on centralised fossil fuelled generation and reduce carbon emissions.

The research has been endorsed by the Federal Government, with Horizon Power receiving $1.92 million of funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:

“The Carnarvon DER trials will contribute to the McGowan Government’s Energy Transformation Strategy by exploring the most economically efficient ways to design and manage a future grid and reduce our dependence on centralised fossil fuelled generation.

“Recognition of Horizon Power’s cutting-edge trials on the international stage is an outstanding achievement. It offers us the opportunity to share with other APEC countries the work we are undertaking to improve WA’s energy future.”
