Thirty job seekers are putting their skills to the test, learning how to excel in the workforce and connecting with local hospitality operators in need of workers as part of the five-day Kimberley Hospitality Job Connect.
The fast-track interactive course, running until May 14 in Kununurra, includes masterclasses and off-site activities led by WA Food Ambassador Chef Don Hancey, and representatives from local businesses.
Job seekers will leave equipped with the skills and training to succeed in a hospitality role, including industry certifications such as Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). They will spend the week learning barista and safe food handling skills, and have access to CV support and work readiness advice.
The week-long course ends with an employer visit, providing businesses with an opportunity to speak to participants about job opportunities, what they look for in a worker and the benefits of working for their company – linking employers with job seekers.
The Kimberley Hospitality Job Connect is just one of the initiatives the State Government is implementing through Tourism WA to assist the tourism and hospitality industry to address workforce attraction and retention issues.
As stated by Tourism Minister David Templeman:
“We know the hospitality industry is facing significant labour shortages and we are working to upskill locals to meet the demand.
“Through programs such as Kimberley Hospitality Job Connect, we’re training job seekers, as well as connecting them with potential employers, making the industry an attractive and rewarding career prospect.”
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:
“This is a fantastic initiative that will help local businesses operate during the busy dry season.
“It will also give locals who are looking for work a great opportunity to upskill and gain employment.”
