Hydro and TasNetworks securing Tasmania’s renewable energy future

Guy Barnett,Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction

Today’s GBE hearings reaffirm the important role our energy businesses play in securing Tasmania’s renewable energy future.

Tasmania is already 100 per cent self-sufficient in renewable energy thanks to our nation-leading energy policies. We are powering ahead to achieve 200 per cent renewables by 2040 with the legislated Tasmanian Renewable Energy Target.

TasNetworks and Hydro Tasmania are playing their part in delivering on our renewable energy vision and the Tasmanian Government thanks them for their outstanding contribution that is benefiting our State.

Thanks to the strong performance detailed in their 2020-21 Annual Reports, both Hydro and TasNetworks are returning significant dividends to the State Budget that will be reinvested into services and infrastructure to benefit all Tasmanians.

Both Hydro Tasmania and TasNetworks are also investing directly in Tasmania, not just by employing thousands of Tasmanians and supporting local businesses, but also in the broader community with sponsorships and grants programs that deliver vital funding for local community groups.

We will continue to back our energy businesses as we progress the Marinus Link and Battery of the Nation projects, and our complementary vision for renewable hydrogen.

Tasmania has what the nation wants in affordable, reliable and clean renewable energy, and our energy businesses will continue to play an important role as we deliver on our State’s exciting renewable energy potential.
