IAG ready to support customers in northern Queensland as Tropical Cyclone Jasper approaches

IAG, whose brands include NRMA Insurance, CGU and WFI is on standby to support customers who may be impacted by Tropical Cyclone Jasper as it approaches the Queensland coast.

We have a dedicated Major Event Response Team in place 24/7, who work closely with our in-house Natural Perils team to ensure we’re well prepared to respond to the impacts of severe weather events and provide immediate support for our customers.

Our Natural Perils team has been closely monitoring the system, which at present remains a Category 1 however is forecast to re-intensify and cross the coast as a Category 2. It is expected to continue tracking west toward the Queensland coast and make landfall in the vicinity of Cairns and Port Douglas early Wednesday. Damaging winds are expected to impact areas between Townsville, Cape Melville and potentially as far inland as Palmerville.

Safety must remain the number one priority for North and Far North Queensland communities. It’s critical that residents continue to monitor weather alerts, information from the emergency authorities and follow any evacuation orders.

NRMA Insurance Executive General Manager Claims Luke Gallagher said IAG is ready and well-prepared to help its customers who may be impacted.

“We have extra claims consultants standing by to help our customers lodge their claims and provide immediate support such as temporary accommodation if required.

“IAG’s Partner Repairers and Assessors have also been briefed and are mobilising their teams to the wider region which is expected to be impacted, and will be on the ground in the affected communities once it’s safe to do so.

“We’ve also secured 5,000 Make Safe Tarps to secure homes with damaged roofs – which are ready to be shipped into the impacted areas from Brisbane. Make Safe Tarping is specialised material that effectively wraps the roof, preventing further wind or rain damage.

“Tropical Cyclones put lives at risk and have the potential to cause significant damage and destruction to properties and communities. We are urging people in northern Queensland to stay safe and to please contact us immediately if they are impacted so we can organise emergency support such as temporary accommodation, financial assistance and conduct emergency Make Safe repairs to properties,” continued Mr Gallagher.

“If you can’t call us, the best way to lodge a claim is online via our brands’ website and for NRMA Insurance customers, via the app.”

We will provide additional updates as the situation progresses.
