The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) will provide a front row fashion experience for Victorians, with Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifesto to open to the public tomorrow.
The exhibition will be the first in Australia to exclusively focus on the works of twentieth-century French fashion icon Gabrielle Chanel.
The gallery’s summer exhibition will present more than 100 garments from throughout Chanel’s career, alongside her innovations in perfume, cosmetics, jewellery and accessory design.
Presented by the NGV in partnership with the famous Paris fashion museum Palais Galliera, the exhibition includes designs from the fashion house’s heritage collections, alongside important loans from major public museums and private collections.
Coveted pieces showcased in the must-see work include Chanel’s iconic tailored suits, rare examples of early daywear and gowns associated with her 1930s ‘romantic’ period.
After premiering in France in late 2020, the presentation in Melbourne marks the first time the exhibition has been shown outside of Paris.
Showcasing the breadth of Chanel’s creativity, the show explores how her designs continue to influence fashion and culture today.
The exhibition stands alongside a blockbuster Victorian calendar of shows, events and performances as another major drawcard, attracting visitors back to Melbourne for a summer of world-class creative experiences.
Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto will be on display from tomorrow until next April at the NGV International on St Kilda Road.
