Implementation Plan outlines exciting opportunities for Barkly Regional Deal

The Barkly Regional Deal is on track to improve the productivity and liveability of the region, with today’s release of the Deal’s Implementation Plan outlining the Deal’s steady progress.

Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories Nola Marino said the Plan outlines the Deal’s achievements, with 26 projects on track and two projects already completed.

“The Plan showcases how the Deal’s 28 economic, social and cultural initiatives are being delivered efficiently across government and in partnership with the local Barkly community,” Assistant Minister Marino said.

“We’ve recently had the Bureau of Meteorology commence site visits in Tennant Creek for the new weather radar to be constructed, with the community engagement process, including with Traditional Owners, to commence shortly.

“The new radar will support the local community and the agricultural, mining and transport industries through real time weather information. This project highlights the benefits of all three levels of government coming together to deliver tangible outcomes for the Barkly region.”

Northern Territory Minister for Treaty and Local Decision Making Selena Uibo said the Plan shows how the 28 commitments under the Deal are responding to the priorities identified by Aboriginal leaders, communities and organisations.

“We know it is the residents of the Barkly region who are best placed to make the decisions that impact them,” Minister Uibo said.

“I am pleased to see such strong consultation and engagement with community underpinning the progression of the Deal’s local economic, social and cultural priorities, through initiatives such as the Youth Justice Facility, which has recently gone to tender, and the Tennant Creek Visitor Park, ensuring these facilities are designed to respond to community needs and help achieve Deal’s objectives.

“This is an exciting time for the region as we have been able to chart a clear delivery plan, which will cement the Barkly region as a great place to live, work and visit.”

Barkly Regional Council Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin said with these plans in place, the council will continue working with government and community to make these initiatives a reality.

“The Deal has provided a great platform to support Council’s local engagement, including delivering the Deal’s community sports initiative which is increasing community participation in sport and recreational activities,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“We’re also excited about getting construction underway shortly for the $7.6 million Building Better Regions Fund youth infrastructure project, which will deliver a new youth centre and bike path in Tennant Creek, an upgraded youth centre in Ali Curung and a new skate park in Alpurrurulam.

“The Deal continues to kick goals for this region and I’m excited for the future prospects of the Barkly.”

The Plan has been released alongside the Barkly Futures Forum being held in Tennant Creek on 24 and 25 February. The Forum will explore five key and exciting sectors that are growing in the Barkly region – agribusiness, creative arts, social services, tourism, energy, mining and resources.

The Forum will also provide local businesses with a platform to speak directly to business leaders, government representatives and other experts. The forum will help local businesses identify the economic opportunities available to them.

The Barkly Regional Deal is the first Regional Deal in Australia – a 10-year $78.4 million commitment between the Australian and Northern Territory governments and the Barkly Regional Council.
