Improvised Explosive Device – Minninup Beach (Bunbury)

State Security Investigation Group detectives are seeking information regarding the discovery of a small improvised explosive device in the car park of Minninup Beach, near Bunbury, on Tuesday 22 October 2019.

The device was located by a member of the public. The item has since been seized by WA Police Force and subsequent forensic examination of the device has indicated that the device could have denoted, given the right circumstances.

While the device was located on Tuesday 22 October 2019, it is not yet known how long it had been there, or whether it was intended to be left there. A search of the area was conducted, and no other items were located.

Police would like to speak to anyone who has information regarding this item, or who saw any suspicious activity in the vicinity of the Minninup Beach car park on Tuesday 22 October 2019, or in the days prior.

A WA Police Force spokesperson said it is concerning the device was located in an area where children could have located it.

“The person who left the device in the car park area appears to have no regard for the safety of others, including children who frequent the beach area with their families. Fortunately no one was injured, however it is simply unacceptable that someone is willing to expose other community members to such danger.”
