Increased supports for Defence families

Department of Defence

The Government is continuing to invest in Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and their families through improved health and wellbeing services.

The recently announced Defence Strategic Review reinforced that personnel are our most important capability, and the importance of investing in the growth and retention of a highly skilled Defence workforce.

We’re prioritising Defence people, and their families. That’s why Defence families will have access to increased allowances and more health and wellbeing services under a further expanded ADF Family Health Program from 1 July.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, the Hon Matt Keogh MP said the first phase of the expansion of the ADF Family Health Program was announced in December 2022.

“The initial expansion of health services were prompted by feedback from ADF members and families. That direct feedback showed that while families value the ADF Family Health Program, more could be done to increase their access to affordable healthcare,”

“Today I’m pleased to announce the second phase of that expansion, including the doubling of the annual benefit from $400 to $800 for each dependant, and inclusion of more eligible services”, Minister Keogh said.

From 1 July, families will be able to claim additional eligible services including supporting healthy diets, cancer screening and prevention.

“The expanded funding and new eligible services will give families access to a greater range of preventative and wellbeing supports for an active and healthy lifestyle,” Minister Keogh said.

“Supporting our ADF workforce and their families is a priority, and we are committed to continuing to improve services and supports to best meet the needs of Defence families.

“This initiative continues to demonstrate our commitment to deliver key workforce priorities in response to the Defence Strategic Review, as well as to ensure our ADF workforce and their families are supported with access to modern, and attractive pay and conditions.

“To current serving members, if you have not done so yet, I encourage you to sign up your families for the ADF Family Health Program to make the most of the services on offer.”

The Albanese Government is committed to delivering cost of living relief for families all over Australia, including delivering on a better future for Defence families.

All permanent ADF members and Reservists on continuous full-time service and their families are eligible to participate in the ADF Family Health Program.
