The McGowan Government is making sure it has the right settings to support a strong and diversified economy, with a suite of reforms that include a review of its Intellectual Property (IP) Policy.
Led by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, the review will deliver a new policy for State Government agencies on the use, development and management of IP.
The core functions of Western Australian government agencies frequently result in the creation of IP, which is a valuable asset to the State.
The new policy will help support the future growth of the State’s economy through promoting the development of priority sectors for diversification, attracting investment and job creation, building WA’s reputation for entrepreneurial activity, and encouraging innovation both inside and outside the public sector.
A discussion paper has been released to lead consultation with stakeholders across both government and non-government sectors, including research, science, health and innovation.
Key proposals for feedback include facilitating commercialisation of government IP, clarifying IP ownership and providing an appropriate rewards and benefit sharing framework, as well as measures to increase access to IP expertise and assistance.
The new IP Policy is part of a suite of reforms focused on economic diversification and job creation, which also includes the development of biodiscovery legislation, the review of the Western Australian Jobs Act (2017) and Diversify WA.
