International Compost Awareness Week and compost rebate program

Food waste makes up around 40% of the contents of our rubbish bins.

To prevent this waste going direct to landfill which adds to carbon pollution, composting at home is a viable and sustainable option to create valuable soil additives that can be used in vegetable and ornamental gardens.

International Compost Awareness Week Australia (ICAW) runs from 1-7 May. It aims to raise awareness and knowledge of the importance of compost and its many uses.

At an individual level, composting can save you money, improve your garden and reduce your impact on the environment.

Yarra Ranges Council offers rebates of up to $40 to residents who have recently purchased equipment for composting at home. Equipment eligible for the rebate includes:

  • Compost bin
  • ‘Compost mate’ turning tool
  • Compost/Worm farm blanket
  • Worm farm
  • Composting worms
  • Bokashi bin
