Investigation into suspicious fire at Williamstown shop continues

Police will hold an information caravan in Williamstown today in a bid to gain further information as part of their investigation into a suspicious ice cream store fire earlier this month.

Emergency services were called to the Nelson Place store around 3.45am on 5 January.

Police believe at least two men drove up to the store in what is believed to be a silver Toyota Yaris sedan, before smashing a front window and pouring accelerant inside.

They have then set the store alight before leaving the area in the Yaris.

The store and the apartment above sustained significant damage during the fire, however no one was injured.

Police are treating the incident as a targeted attack.

Investigators will look at whether it is linked to any other recent incidents, however at this time police do not believe it is linked to two fires at a different ice cream shop in Williamstown in November last year.

Detectives from the VIPER Taskforce are investigating the fire and are appealing for any information about the incident.

An information caravan will be set up on Nelson Place, near the intersection of Cole Street, between 3-7pm on 17 January.

Investigators are encouraging anyone in the area who may have information about the fire or any suspicious activity that may be linked to it, to come to the caravan and speak with police.

Any information, no matter how insignificant the details may seem, could prove crucial to the investigation.

Police are also releasing an image of a silver Toyota Yaris similar to that seen at the scene of the fire on 5 January.

Detectives are yet to locate this vehicle and are appealing for anyone with information about the car or it’s current whereabouts to come forward.

The men involved in the incidents are described as being perceived to be of African appearance.

Police are also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the fire or who may have CCTV or dash-cam footage of the vehicle or the men.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
